Sitting in the Miami airport....making some last minute arrangements....like - where are we going to stay the first night and how are we going to get there.? All of a sudden it seems like Managua must be quite a tourist destination as the couchsurfers are few and busy and the hostels are full...but we luck out. Lillian, the couchsurfer who runs the Quaker House offers a couple of beds and directions to the place. Whew!! Going to plan a bit ahead from now on....So we arrive....nice airport....and the usual crowd leaning into the glass frontage of the airport craning to find loved ones arriving..taxis trying to get a fare somewhere..everybody calling out...looking for you to be the one. Always a little intimidating. But then, amongst the crowd, a man holding a sign with my own name on it...something Ive always wished for. So after some challenging / are we understanding this? conversation, we're in his taxi and off to Casa Cuaquera? Driving through the full-of potholes streets, hot humid air sweeping thru the tiny rattling taxi...mostly deserted, pretty desolate looking streets, glad Im not on foot, smells of diesel, political billboards, some wild driving....all make me know Ive arrived in Nicaragua...familiar sights/sounds...really glad to be here. But where are we headed exactly? Midway, we realize he's heading to a hotel we emailed that afternoon...but the Casa is expecting us.....dilemma....we pull over to negotiate...not much on our side to negotiate with - we're not about to hop out of the cab at night on some rough looking side of the road. Well needless to say we get there. Costs us a few extra unnecessary bucks....but we get there safe and sound...glad to be introduced around this new group of people...enough excitement for one night. Managua - a tough looking city...I want to see it but dont know how long we'll spend here.
