Many people have heard about Ski Dubai, the indoor ski slopes in a shopping centre in Dubai and some even may have seen them on a travel channel here and there. As part of my friends visit I took her to do a 2 hour slope session. How cool (no pun intended) would it be to ski in the desert!
It took me a couple of small runs to get my footing, as it had been a few years since I had last skiied.....the slopes are graded included a red and black run. We had so much fun and I only had one small fall, while getting on the ski lift of all places....I wasn't even on the slope! I was rather embarrassed as one minute I was standing there about to sit down and the next I had fallen over sideways as the chair swept over my legs!
Nearing the end of our 2 hours, we headed up to the red run to give it a go....it was awesome to gather speed as we headed down hill....deciding to have one last run before heading to lunch we went back up to the red run and my friend went first. half way down I took off and 20 meters or so down the hill, at a great speed I lost control and was saumersaulting down the hill...next thing I now my knee is bent at the wrong angle and the worst pain shooting through my legs...
I had to be rescued off a bloody indoor slope, slid onto a back board and skied down the slope to the clinic below...unfortunately this great 2 hour ski session ended up with me in hospital with major ligament damage and ended up in plaster and a leg brace!
Regardless of this little incident, I do recommend doing this activity for the pure novelty of it..snow in the desert.
Ski Dubai is located in the Mall of the Emirates and you can tobbaggan and play in the snow. Afterwards you can sit in St Moritz cafe, sipping hot chocolate and dipping into hot chocolate fondues sitting around the fake fire!
