Where I stayed
It is an interesting irony that the week I go to see the late King of Music's mansion and learn about his life, perhaps his biggest challenger to that title dies as well (MJ). I decided to walk to the free shuttle which was about 1.5km which would normally be easy enough for someone like me. The problem was that it was at least 36 degrees outside so this was rather challenging. I got on the Sun Studio free shuttle and arrived at Graceland at about 12pm. All the people in Memphis I’ve found congregate at either Beale St or at Graceland, the rest of Memphis is completely deserted. It’s strange because there are many potential people attractors, but the people don’t seem to be a 'comin.
I soon found out that the wait for the Mansion tour was 2 hours, so I got the premium ticket which allowed me to see his car collection and his private planes while waiting. He had a lot of cars and liked to travel around in style, albeit pink style. His tailor made plane was nice given it was quite old and I am sure would have been start of the art back in his day. There was also an Elvis museum which explored his rise to fame through Hollywood movies and his eventual concentration on music alone.
Once I had waited the 2 hours I was allowed to get in line. The problem was that the line was outside and it was unbearably hot. I can’t understand how these Americans can tolerate this consistently hot weather, especially given that it snows here in Winter. The mansion was interesting to see, but we weren’t allowed upstairs to see his bedroom and private areas. It wasn’t enormous, but certainly big enough and cosy for a man like Elvis Presley.
I had a genius plan on the way home. I thought because it was so hot, I'd get a chocolate sundae and carry it on the walk back. Unfortunately I misjudged how far the walk was and I was then in a battle of time against the Sundae. I was losing badly and conceded and therefore decided to eat as I walked. It was a bitter loss and one that I will have to learn from in future years.
I got home from Graceland and collapsed from the heat and watched the full replay of the game. Was viewing pleasure. I'll be off to Jackson, Mississippi tomorrow.
Hope you're all well.
