We pulled into the campground about three o'clock on Tuesday.  The trip from Las Vegas was un-eventful, except for several miles of bad road on US95 and I-40.  When we hit the Arizona line, things on the road improved much.

The campground is truly beautiful.  Our sites are located just next to beach and are large.  Our friend, Pete, arrived from California about an hour after we did.  He drives a thirty-eight luxury rig in which he lives full-time, along with his dog Duffy.  Duffy is only about a year old and is still a puppy, of course.  He's quite lively and likes to get as close to you as is possible.  He has already taken quite a liking to Lynn.  Who wouldn't?  She continues to have that effect on me, even after over 45 years together.  She works with him quite a bit in her "dog whisperer" role.  Once a teacher, always a teacher, comes to play here.

We got set up and spent quite awhile visiting and getting caught up. Pete and I were Russian Linguists in Berlin, Germany back in the dark ages of ball-point pens and multiple-carbon-paper pads of paper.  He'll know what I mean.  Pete visited us in his coach in the fall of 2010 for about a month.  He's been living in the Windsor, California for over a year getting body and soul together and doing well.

We ate dinner outside at the picnic table.  We had marinated pork loin, whole-wheat rolls, spaghetti squash from our garden, salad and homemade ginger cookies.  It cooled off quickly when the sun dropped over the mountains, so we retired to our coach and continued our visit.  Duffy settled down well and is a great dog.  He doesn't say much, but by looking into his eyes, I can tell he's always thinking.

We retired fairly early.  At about three AM, Lynn woke me, saying "Did you hear that?!?" No, I didn't.  However, for some reason, I was the one who had to investigate.  What is wrong with this picture??  I found nothing, but she was "disturbed" from her sleep several times.  I found that I was able to sleep fine and got up about seven.  As requested, i checked for tracks, but found only large Duffy-prints and nothing else.

We got to the Balloon Festival at about ten.  There were several balloons setting up and several in the air already.  They expect about sixty of the things by this weekend.  We walked around the area and were even able to walk into one of them on display.  It gave me an idea of really how huge they are!

They also had several radio-controlled aircraft flying about.  We walked to their staging area and saw some of them.  I never realized how large some of them are.  There were several with wing spans in excess of six feet and two elaborate helicopters about five or six feet in length.  Amazing!  There were also small planes made basically out of styrofoam.  It would be a blast to gee a small one to carry out into the country and fly.

We had lunch at a gyro cafe.  Lynn had a Greek salad and I got a very large gyro.  The food was good.  We then walked back to our car, which was parked about a mile down the road.  We did a bit of shopping at Safeway, gassed-up Sooby and came back to camp.

We visited a bit more with Pete and then had a dinner of barbecued shrimp, rice, stir fry and rolls.  Then the sun went down and we were treated with a fine Arizona sunset over the lake.  I'll save the sunset pictures for tomorrow or so and show you what we saw at the Balloon Fest.  More from here tomorrow... Oh, the temperature got up to near seventy today, so it was shorts and shore-sleeved shirts for Pete and me and a layer less for Lynn.  Duffy wore his same coat.  He's a purist, you know.

Nice romantic comment on Lynn. The balloons are so photogenic. There is a festival in Colorado Springs on labor day that I got to go to with my two oldest back in 84....and wow beautiful....just like the one you are at. Maybe we should start flying remote controlled planes or choppers....I already have a small one and judging by my skills or lack thereof, I should never be allowed to fly.
