Well, the best (at least I’d thought somewhat decently) laid plans of mice and men don’t always go as expected.  Maryland winters are not tropical but they are not extreme either.  I had tried to mitigate the potential by arriving in Papeete 2 days early, widely spacing my flights, and spending the night before departure at a hotel (LaQuinta) near the airport.

By this time last year we had 2 or 3 30-inch snowfalls by this time.  Up to now we’ve had a total of about 4 inches so far this year.  A few flurries were forecast for today ending about 4 pm.  We now have 4 inches on the ground with about another 4 expected ending at 4am tomorrow.  I left home about 5PM for the hotel (3 hours early) and most of the drive was 20mph.  My original flight  through Atlanta was cancelled early today, and I was rebooked on a flight about an hour later (10am) through Detroit, with no change of plane.  As on now (8PM) the flight is on time and I have about a 7-hour connection in Los Angeles, so I’m still optimistic.

I guess for today’s parting shot, just a reminder that when traveling we need to be flexible, allow for the unexpected, and hope for the best.
