Where I stayed
We went a bit posh on this one, Air Con chair class, we got breakfast, chai, water and newspapers... but it was bloody FREEZING! Oh my god why I though Air con would be good I do not know I get cold even in 30 degree heat!! dear god..
Anyway we passed through lots of farmland, saw lots of water buffalo and eventually arrived in Amritsar, home of the famous sikh golden temple and the place to travel from to the attari border..
We had hoped that Amritsar was going to be different to Delhi, not so much hassling and touting but the minute we stepped off the train it all started again.. and our rickshaw driver topped it off by dropping us somewhere apparently near our hostel but so very kindly didnt tell us where our hostel was and so we had to walk through the streets in 40 degree heat, backpacks and getting touted.. dear me, it was just a bit too much to handle, the pinnacle was when some guy grabbed adam and pushed him in to another hotel doorway even though we had just spotted ours, I tell you they dont give up easily..
Anyway we arrived eventually, now hostels I have done my fair share but this was pretty grim but it was cheap and a bed for the eve and close to the temple so we went with it..
Once rested we ventured out and arranged our transport to the Attari border to witness the famous closing of the Pakistan/India border. Now this is no small thing, thousands of people go to this, everyday!! its HUGE, its mental, bangra dancers, loads of people lined in stands dancing, singing, shouting, there is a special bit for us foreigners.. which is great position as we get to see it all.
The soilders line up and basically what can only be described as a John Cleese impression, they skip, kick and hop down the road to the Pakistan gate and throw their leg as high as either their balls or trouser seams will allow in an attempt to out do the Pakistani guys who in turn are causing themselves a hernia at the other end!! My God its hilarious, something quite different to HRH changing of the guard.. and the tashes these guys have would make a french man cry!!
Such a great thing to see and so so funny.. will post the pics tomorrow but they dont do it justice, its something that has to be seen to be believed..
Anyway after this we piled back into our transport, which basically was one of those rascal vans, you know the ones usually used for delivery drivers.. 8 of us got into this and hot a sweaty dont describe it... we were so SO hot in there... I think I lost my love handles!!
We got back to Amritsar by about 9.30pm and were pretty knackered so after a nights rest alongside the bed bugs..(yes they were there crawling around) we went to the temple the next day..
Its an amazing place, the temple sits in the middle of a huge pool called the necter I believe, lots of sikhs bathe in this and cleanse themselves.. there is a huge white structure all around so its enclosed away from the outside world, marble pathways take you around and it really is something very special and serene, you have to wash your hands and feet and cover your head to enter as you can see from the profile picture.. it really is beautiful. Will post more pictures soon..
One thing that happens alot is young guys taking pictures of their mates with us, more than often just with me as I think I might find that Im being posted as a UK Bride on the net, we shall see... very weird though.. but funny too.
We didnt have long in the temple as we had to get our train but it was an amazing place just a shame that when you get out yet again the touts are on you like flies on shit but we were heading out of town again to Jaipur so we hoped that that would be better again..
Update on the train journey and Jaipur to come..
