Where I stayed
Hotel Delhi City Centre, New Delhi
Luckily our taxi driver wasn't as mad as what we had been expecting but there were a few near misses with other drivers on route and a few cows too.
Our first impressions of Delhi were Oh My God!!! and I think in a way we still think that, its the kind of city I think you can either love or hate and I don't think we were particularly falling in love with it.
We spent two days there, we went to the red fort which is beautifully quiet, mind you the guards have their guns pointed at each entry which is a bit of a worry in case they got too trigger happy
Then we ventured into Connaught Place, this is renowned for shopping, restaurants, for shoe shiners who purposefully throw poo at your shoes so that they can offer to clean them for you as well as young men who just want to be your friend but make commission of taking you to some cafe/bar and selling you all sorts of trips, hotels, etc...
Next day we did a day of sightseeing, India Gate, Humayuns Tomb, Gandhi last residence and where he was assassinated, Presidential Palace, Parliament, Laxminarayan Temple, Oh and our rickshaw driver very kindly took us to a emporium full of saris, carpets, rugs, statues, jewelery and other such things which we really didn't want to buy but just to keep them quiet ended up buying a top for way above street price so nice bit of commission for him!
On our last night we went to the Paharganj Main Bazaar which is chaos but good to see for the different stalls, hawkers, touts and yes.. more cows.. some guy tried to tout us saying he lived in Camden for a few years, yet we mentioned somewhere well known nearby and he hadn't heard of it so kind of gave it away that it was unlikely he had been to Camden, it seems most of these guys lived in Camden, apparently
One very memorable part is when a shoe shiner near our hotel came up to me offering to shine my shoes, I am living in flip flops so how he expected to shine these I do not know, I pointed this fact out to him and he offered to take us to a store to buy shoes and then he will shine them..... hmmmmmmmm obviously we didn't do this..
Another place was a little restaurant just near the rail station every night there were about 8 guys all working there literally dragging people off the street in military style, was crazy to see and very funny their enthusiasm for it too.
We left Delhi on Thursday heading for Amritsar, I think Delhi is a great city if you have been in India for a while as it is a massive test on your patience and just too much as a first stop over.. for us anyway!
