Thursday 22 August 2002

Took subway under Nile to Syrian Embassy to leave passport for Visa to enter Syria. Very pleasant treatment by all even as an American. No Israeli stamp in my passport so no problem. But quite expensive US$50. Official explained the way diplomacy works is they charge what USA charges Syrians for a US Visa.

Then walked a short distance to small island in Nile where the Cairo Opera House was located. Impressive buildings but not open. Proceeded to Cairo Tower and went to top for great views of the city. Could just barely make out pyrimad to west in haze.

Then walked across bridge to East side of Nile and to Egyptian Museum. Incredible. Took no photos because flash was forbidden.

Then went to Old City, crowded market streets and to a couple of many of the old mosques. Climbed the stairs to the minaret top of two forget their names. Fine views of old area.

*** I may come back to this entry again to fill in more detail but in order to remove the draft status and make it available for viewing I will just make a few sketchy comments. ***
