The journey from Newport to Westhampton isn't far as the crow flies, but our route took us on three ferries and numerous bridges, as the road island-hopped across the tip of Long Island. It was grey and misty, but the clouds were more threatening than they have been. The weather forecast said storms running up the east coast and I hoped the ferry wouldn’t be cancelled. It didn’t take long to cross into Connecticut and get to New London – just on the outskirts we went through the town of Mystic (where the Julia Roberts film Mystic Pizza is based) which had an ancient drawbridge and attractive harbour as well as the famous pizza shop. As we got to the ferry terminal the heavens opened and it kept on raining for the next 3 hours or so – the sea was completely flat, but the rain was incredible – you couldn’t see anything, except a small submarine which was heading into the naval base as we were heading out. Once on Long Island, in New York State we had another two short ferry rides across to Shelter Island and then North Haven, which sit between the two arms of the north-eastern tip of Long Island. Even though it was still cloudy I stuck with the plan of driving to Montauk, to see if it would be a good place to catch a sunrise – it would have been lovely, especially with the red and white striped lighthouse, but it turned out to be far too far from Westhampton to be driving tomorrow morning. I’m glad we went there though – even though it was bustling with holiday makers and surfers, it was a windswept and desolate place. The road down from Montauk to Westhampton passes through East Hampton, which I think must be the biggest and most upmarket of the Hamptons – there were designer shops with Aston Martins and Porches parked outside. The traffic was horrendous (I’m starting to realise we’re back on the busy east coast) so the journey took a lot longer than expected. I’ve found a windswept stretch of Westhampton beach to visit tomorrow morning and I’ve decided that from there we’ll head straight on down back to DC instead of stopping for the night in Atlantic City.

Long Island.........
is the place to be. I wish I'd managed to get there when I was working in NJ. Montauk looks a lovely town, I took a look at the lighthouse and the beach you visited.
