Where I stayed

Flag of United States  , Minnesota
Monday, June 22, 2009

I took very few pictures today – entirely justified in the case of North Dakota, but perhaps a little rough on poor old Minnesota, which has put a lot of effort into generating roadside photo opportunities. I should, at least, have stopped for the Nissen hut converted into a giant fish, the signpost to a town called Climax, the Polk County Museum with "The World's Largest Wagon" parked outside and the watertower for “Floodwood – Catfish Capital”. I did however, take a photo of dungarees-clad Loren filling up the tank of his antique Ford tractor at the gas station in Polk County, MN. Loren was slightly bemused at my explanation that I was driving across America and getting a photo of someone from each state (not actually true) and was telling the story about the mad englishwoman to the other customers when I left. Minnesota transitioned from wheat to lakes and logging. I could smell cut pine for miles before we entered the paper-mill town of Grand Rapids where there was the largest pile of logs I have ever seen - 50 ft high and about quarter of a mile long. The other highlights of today were getting the car washed at the geographical centre of North America, re-crossing the Mississippi, and buying a coffee thermos in the town where Judy Garland was born. Nuff said!

P.S Good luck to Damo in his AC - I'm sure he'll do brilliantly.

I can smell the pines.......
they are wonderful trees aren't they? A friend of mine in the States comes from Minnesota. He's talked a lot about the lakes.

Take care
