Tartu is supposed to be nice. I wouldn't know. We didn't have time to stop and look. Finances, time and route planning meant the 'burbs and the railway station were all we saw. We headed south, determined to get to Kaunus for Nick's flight on Sunday evening. We skirted Voru on the way, waving a greeting to my penpal Silva, who lives there, but was currently not at home.

Nick had a desire to see the Russian border. The USSR's dark shadow of his childhood still loomed large in his mind, and he wanted to stare at the brooding presence that lurked in the east. We drove up the main highway towards the customs post. Lots of lorries were lined up on the side of the road, waiting for inspection. As the border came into sight, Nick became increasingly nervous, which is amusing from someone who used to support the Revolutionary Communist Party.

Anyway, as soon as we could see the trees on the other side of the customs buildings, Nick bottled out and turned the car round. I think he had visions of armed Ruskies chasing him and carting him off to some hard-labour gulag for being wantonly English too close to Russia.

After that, we drove across Latvia. It took a long time. There were pines, lakes, storks and much scenic stuff, but it took forever. Still, we have less to do tomorrow to get Nick to his flight home.
