Tomek suggested I took the route through Alytus to avoid traffic. This seemed sensible, looking at the map. There was a similarly large road running up towards Mariampole on the Polish map I was using. We stopped just before the Lithuanian border for coffee and ice-cream, only to discover the big red road I was supposed to follow did not exist on the Lithuanian map I was about to start using. A lorry driver sensed my confusion and we discussed the problem of the disappearing A road in a mixture of languages not including English, but relying heavily on hand signals. He made it quite clear that the route chosen was wriggly and slow. He even used that internationally understood description "Scheiße".

I chose a new route with my new friend's help and set off. I had plenty of time, but I was still un-nerved when a few minutes later my phone bleeped to tell me I'd gone through a new time zone and I had one hour less to get to Kaunus airport to pick up Nick. Still, I was pretty pleased. I'd driven through two time zones in less than a week. How cool is that?

Somewhere in Alytus, I missed the turning to Kaunus. Several kilometres later, I stopped in a tiny village, inhabited by farmers. Dodging the chickens, I asked for help with the directions. The old man I'd picked on, pointed back the way I'd come, made signals that it was two somethings away - kilometres, turnings, traffic lights? Who knows? Eventually his daughter motioned that I could follow her car back to the right road. I was very grateful. We had to go back into Alytus, but then I was on my way again.

The remaining journey was uneventful, and we got to Kaunus airport about 5 minutes after Nick came through what amounts for customs. Incidentally, I haven't had my passport checked since I got off the boat in Holland. The borders are truly porous.

The kids were thrilled to see their Dad after a week of separation.
