The road was built in Soviet times, when Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan were one and the same. The border follows the river, approximately, and the road wobbles to and fro across the border as it feels like it. Whilst there is not that much to tell you about the road, I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce the cast of this trek epic, so that you are familiar with the characters in the story, and have somewhere to refer back to if you get muddled up.
