Flag of Switzerland  , Valais,
Thursday, August 4, 2011

We were hot, hot, hot after our climb through the trees. The lake beckoned. We headed in the direction of the Swiss border, which we discovered was not far. St Gingolph is split by the frontier. In fact we were at the customs' post before we knew it - and without our passports. The guard waved us through without asking for them, but it made us nervous, wondering if we would be able to return to France unhindered.

We drove through a couple of towns before stopping in an affluent looking beach-side resort. Having no Swiss francs, we cadged a parking ticket off someone who was leaving. To be fair, we needn't have bothered, as there was no access to the beach unless you paid to go into the complex. At this time of the evening, it was just not worth getting a second mortgage to do that.

We headed, sadly back to France, but before we crossed the frontier Nick took a sudden swing to the right and headed down a narrow, steep hill, straight to the lake-side. Across the bay we could see the beach we'd just turned down, densely peopled with tourists.

The tourist information place wins awards for helpfulness. Not only did they let us use their parking space for free, and fill up our bottle with drinking water, but they directed us to a free swimming area ten minutes walk away. We stripped off and cooled down in the gently lapping waters, looking at the stunning Swiss Alps as we did so.I can finally say I've "been to" Switzerland. What a glorious end to the day.
