I let Nick organise the picnic. This was my first mistake. We had sandwiches, but nothing else. I slung in some muesli bars and a bottle of water, but we were on short rations. Nick would like me to point out that the lack of lunch was my fault because I didn't tell him what to pack. Go figure.

The destination was Yvoire, a medieval town on the lakeside. We wandered the streets of stone buildings, admiring the colourful shutters and window-boxes cascading with flowers. The kids played on the large rocks lining the shore for ages. We ate our meagre rations and decided 60 quid was too much to spend on the Garden of Five Senses, no matter how lovely it looked.

We looked at some pottery and glassware shops, while I held my breath, hoping that the kids wouldn't actually knock anything expensive over. Mum discovered a pretty white hat, which cost a small fortune. Armed with her new flying helmet, we walked along the dock, past rows of masted sailing boats bobbing in the twinkling water. Angela picked her favourite for each of us.

We crossed a bit of a jetty and a launch ramp into the lake. Mel and Eartha managed to do a synchronised slide on the ramp, thus achieving the "wet foot of the holiday" early on.

There is a supermarket called Super U in Amphion. Whilst Mike and Angela were doing a huge shop - apples, wine, onions, wine, wet celery, beer, etc - Mum, Mel and I went off on a mission to find some clingy trunks for Mel and Mike, and a cossie for Mum,who had left hers at home. Mike gave me a size for me to look for, that was maybe a little ambitious. The resulting trunks, when he tried them on later, were eye-watering.

As soon as we got back, the kids leapt into the pool on site. It was described as 'heated', which probably took the edge off it. There was a certain amount of standing on tip-toe and sucking stomachs in before immersion though.

We ended the evening with a barbeque, which made up for the scarcity of lunch.
