Feb 6, 06

Two of my JET friends, Karina and Makenzie, and I went to a Maiko dance and dinner. It was a special event for a Community Center's 60th Anniversary celebration. THe dance that the maiko and geiko performed is usually seen in Kyoto in the Spring. The event was held in a big conference room with a bunch of round dinner tables. The dance was about an hour long and the hostess interviewed the 4 maiko (apprentice geiko, usually till the age of 20, then they become a geiko). THe dinner was delicious. There were 6 dishes. THere was an appetizer that was served in a fancy square dish. It had two squares of egg, tofu with jello on the top, sushi, and another thing of sushi wrapped in a leaf. Next, was miso soup, then there sushi served in a bamboo stalk (OISHI DESU!),some kind of fish, crab and cheese served in a crab shell (OISHI DESU!), bread with beef, and hard noodles with a vegetable and shrimp soup. FOr dessert, there was tea and flan. It was a Nagasaki cuisine. THe dishes were put on a big "lazy susan" that was in the middle of the table. It seemed that the lazy susan was moving though cause at times it would be hitting our dishes and then later the dishes across the table. The food came rather quickly, so we had to keep up with eating, taking our serving, and talking. It was interesting. Makenzie had trouble keeping up at times, but we all had difficulty. All in all, it was a fun night. And well worth the 25,000 Yen. This was my Valentine's present to myself and my big thing for this month.

Enjoy the pictures!
