We arrived in Meissen, Germany this evening after an entire day of rain. Our paniers and waterproofs held up quite well, however, and the town is beautiful--old (cobbled) streets, church spires, and row houses on steep hills above the river. Today the scenery has changed from fields to hills and vineyard towns along the river...our first big landscape change since starting.
After our day in Berlin, we've cycled south to the Elbe River, which we'll follow through to Prague. We stopped in Potsdam the first night, rather inadvertently. We stopped there for a break, had a cup of tea, wandered the town, and found an amazing outdoor shop. Kristin bought a new set of paniers (dryproof!) and Rachel got cycle ride advice from a nice man outside the shop. Apparently Pakistan is quite nice for cycling, as is Croatia...The next night we were in Wittenberg, where we met our first British couple since starting the ride. It was nice to speak to someone in English! We started following the Elbe the next day. There are ferries across 100m stretches of water instead of bridges, and lots of cyclists. Kristin has managed two spectacular somersaults over her bike, to the amusement of everyone watching. We're both still in one piece, though the stairs to bed are a bit of a challenge. Three 80-plus km days are not so good for the legs.

Love,

Kristin and Rachel
