Ramallah Friends Meeting

Yesterday I attended worship at Ramallah Friends Meeting.  The meetinghouse has been restored and an International Peace Center has begun there also.  Kathy Bergen from the United States is directing its activities.

Worship is unprogrammed.  The outer wall and the taxi drivers share the same space.  They wait in a line for their next fare on the sidewalk and lean on the wall, talking loudly and often playing Arabic music on their car radios. I do really well staying centered for the first 20 minutes, then I read scripture and then I am distracted.  Last week we sang two hymns towards the end and that was very welcome to my spirit as a way to recenter and then go forth.

Derek Lamson from West Hills Friends Church, Northwest Yearly Meeting was there to play his guitar and sing following worship.  He had been staying with Holly and Alan Dynes so it was good to see them again also.

Derek had sent me a poem he had written in Nairobi for possible publication in Quaker Life.  He had been in central Africa, visiting among Friends.  On Monday, a week ago, I responded to his email and then when I arrived at the Dynes, there he was, staying with them.  So it seems like a small world among Quakers!

This Sunday Derek shared some songs he had written and some experiences he had in Africa and in Hebron with CPTers.  One of his songs was in memory of Tom Fox, the CPTer who was killed in Iraq.  It was a good time of fellowship and being open to the spirit.

Enjoy these wonderful photos of Alan and Holly and baby Carys who is 10 months old and almost ready to take off walking on her own!
