A very busy day today! I woke up early today, had a quick breakfast and started Stockholm exploration according to Rick Steves's recommendations :)
10 am - visited Vasa museum, a building storing and displaying Vasa, one of the last remaining warships of 17th century. What's ironic, the ship never made it past the harbor where she was built! Due to the lack of ballast, she capsized and sank 20 minutes into her maiden voyage... BUT, Swedes turned that ridiculous failure into success by raising the ship 333 years after it sank and preserving it in a unique museum! The ship is an amazing sight - so large, so well-preserved and restored. Even though she is missing her paint, sails and the original splendor, she is still extremely impressive!
12 pm - visited Nordic museum, which contains very interesting expositions depicting everyday life of Swedes from medieval ages to modern days. IKEA furniture is represented as well :)
2 pm - visited Skansen - an amazing open-air museum, somewhat similar to Black Creek Pioneer Village. Swedish government, in effort to preserve rapidly disappearing rural culture, moved a large number of old buildings from all parts of the country.
5 pm - toured the modern part of Stockholm with huge malls, busy markets, lots of people and traffic. I also took a peek at one of Stockholm's subway station, carved out of solid bedrock. That particular station was decorated with remains of an ancient civilization, hidden under Stockholm! A clueless tourist might even believe that :)
6:30 pm - took a boat tour around canals of Stockholm.
Then it started raining and I headed back to the hostel.

Fun fact: Swedish and Finnish casinos are state-owned. Any money lost there will be helping local economy and social programs :)
