Where I stayed
Eurohostel - Helsinki
It was a pretty good day today - first thing in the morning I hit the sauna, since morning sauna is included in the hostel price :) The place is located on the 7th floor of a 6-floor building, right under the roof. The sauna is done in Finnish style, obviously: wooden panels on the walls, hot stones for regulating steam levels, wooden benches in 2 levels. The best part is a cold shower or a bucket of hot water after the sauna :)
The hostel overall is fairly decent, I live in a 2-bed dorm with some guy who doesn't speak English and minds his own business most of the time, which is great. There's wi-fi in the rooms, kitchens, showers, lockers and did I mentioned the sauna? :)
I also bought some food in the local supermarket, so that now I can have some cereal in the morning and tea whenever I want!
Another great thing about the hostel is heavy blinds, which are vital if you want to get any sleep in Finland in summer :) The sun goes down at 10pm and around 5 it's already up and shining!
In any case, today I woke up around 8am, had a cereal and hopped into the sauna. Then I browsed the net for a bit and after a while headed out to the city. There I took the open roof bus tour, visited most important places in the city. After the tour I had some reindeer meatballs at the main market square, restored my energy a bit and went exploring the city. Helsinki has huge number of designer boutiques and is generally considered a capital of design. The city is very clean, I've seen how 2 special trucks wash the market square after it's been closed. My area is particularly quit, even though it's a port area called Katajanokka. There are some enormous ferries parked not far from the hostel, I'm going to ride one of them to Stockholm pretty soon :)
I booked tickets to Tallinn today, looking forward for the trip! Everything is much cheaper there, and Finns sometimes spend weekends in Tallinn enjoying the low prices :)
