Hello Travelers,

Leaving Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada and entering Alaska was very interesting.  First, crossed the Yukon River on the ferry, which accommodated 2 large motor homes and little else.  Then we traveled up to the border and was asked the normal questions, "  Is this really your wife?" And, "Is your cat really named Poots?"

Yeah, we are finally back in the U.S. and not soon enough, I can tell you.  Canada was beautiful but the good ole USA is home and we are happy to be here.  Chicken was named by early miners who wanted to name their camp Ptarmigan but couldn't spell the name.

Chicken is occupied by some corporate gold mining interests in the area and a smaller dredge (as shown in previous location).  There's probably 4 inhabitants during the winter and 200 in the summertime mostly connected to tourism or mining.  They do have a post office that operates all year long and the postmaster is one of the 4 citizens.

Had our first scare as the campground had limited electricity and no other services.  Our coach kept tripping the breakers and when we turned off the refrigerator and water heater, the house batteries drained down to "0".  However, with no danger of being stranded because the engine battery was charged up, we were able to start the engine the next day and subsequently, charge up the house batteries as well.  Apparently when we connected to the local power supply, it drained the batteries instead of charging them.  The local electrician was brother daryl and his other brother daryl.   Weird..................

As we settled in for the night, a big boom would occur and talking with other members of the group, we guessed that this howitzer was used to scare off bears and continued until 1:30 AM.  Next morning, we learned that the local roadhouse was loading a cannon with willing women's undergarments resulting in a large boom and then comsuming liquids.  I believe alcohol may have been involved.

Panning for gold was a real hit and were able to harvest some flakes of gold from the gravel pile.  See the pictures as we continued to pan away.  Lotta fun and if we did it for a living we would starve.  No doubt.

This was an overnighter and off we go to Tok,  Alaska for another  adventure.  Stay tuned.
