Since we didn't get all the rain that had been predicted this week, we decided to take a day trip today, a beautiful sunny day, to go check out the Portland Rose Festival. We didn't want to got o the really busy days, when there are parades, and such - our main goal was to see some of the ships in port as part of the Rose Festival. Being a port city, Fleet Week and Tall Ships are regularly a part of the event - and have been for most of the past hundred years!
We did take a tour of the Coast Guard Cutter "Active", which was pretty interesting. Here's a link to some information about it: http://www.uscg.mil/pacarea/active/history.htm
We were disappointed that the Canadian Navy vessels, Saskatoon, Brandon, and Nanaimo, which we saw come into port up the coast in Astoria the other day, were not open to viewing today. The Canadian warship Vancouver, one of the most advanced warships in the world, WAS open, but the lines were very long, and we didn't get there until later in the afternoon when we were already wearing down from having been on our feet quite a while. The procedure to tour the warship was pretty interesting - they required a sign in, with picture id presented. Once you were signed in, then you got in another line, and there they would examine any bags you were carrying, before entering the area where the ships were. Last year, we went on an active Spanish Navy Tall Ship, in Boston Harbor, and there was none of that done!
The two "tall ships" that were in the harbor here are much smaller than the one we saw last year (but that one was the 2nd or 3rd tallest in the world). One of the 2 that we saw today was the Lady Washington, which was in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
Imagine having a festival named for you, and not finding one piece of merchandise that you thought was worth spending your money on, even if it did have your name on it? Bummer for me, not so much for Greg!
