Yesterday (Sunday), we drove into Northwest Portland to meet up with Patty and Bill, old friends of Rose's who now live in Vancouver, Washington (which is just above Portland, so not far away, despite being in a different state!). It took Rose and Patty a while to determine the last time they had seen each other, and we finally narrowed it down to 14 or 15 years ago, when they came back to Minnesota for another friend's wedding. Once we got that discussion out of the way, we got down to the "business" of sharing a bottle of good wine, ordering some great food, and discussing what life is like today. As has been the case when we've met up with other old friends, it seems like no time at all has passed once you get back together - we remember each other's strengths and weaknesses, and can still remember what we liked to tease each other about! We wrapped up the evening at a wonderful little restaurant that specializes in incredible (and HUGE!) desserts - definitely a place that provides good basis for the saying "Eat Dessert First -Life is Uncertain!"
Today, we drove the car the ~35 minutes across the Columbia River to the Long Beach Peninsula of Washington. Long story short, we were supposed to be moving our motorhome to the membership campground we have in Long Beach today, but a small rock hit our windshield last week on our way back from picking up the tow dolly, and we just realized that we now have a crack spreading up the driver's side windshield, which is not a good thing. So, we're staying put at our Seaside, Oregon campground until an auto glass company can get a replacement windshield in for us and install it, hopefully later this week. But, the best laid plans to meet up with friends, could not be sidetracked! Marilyn and Blaine the couple we became friends with in January at Pio Pico near San Diego, and with whom we met up again in April is Casa Grande, Arizona, are parked at Long Beach, and we were supposed to be parking there with them. But, failing that, we drove out there and spent a really fun afternoon visiting with them - and they showed us around the Peninsula, the little towns of Seaview and Ilwaco, and we saw another Lighthouse, too.
As we crossed the bridge to Washington this morning, we saw 3 or 4 vessels coming into the Port of Astoria that we realized were flying the Canadian Maple Leaf, so on our way home, we drove down to the docks to see what we could see. There were three smaller (relatively speaking) Canadian Navy ships, and one Battleship. It was cordoned off, so we couldn't get too close, but I took some pictures, and we managed to see the name on one of the smaller vessels (the Saskatoon), so I was able to come back and look up some information on them. With a bit more research, we found out that they were heading for Portland, where they would be open for tours as part of the 100th Anniversary Rose Festival - looks like we may head back into Portland later this week for Fleet Week and the Tall Ships that are also on display.
I'm getting closer to being caught up with uploading photos to these updates, so you'll hopefully see some added to this entry soon!
