We went on a cruise today on a 65' excursion boat, the "Discovery" that took us not only into Newport's Yaquina Bay, but also out into the ocean a ways, where we sighted a couple of whales. This Marine Discovery Tour featured narrated ocean and bay cruises with guides who are naturalists. The boat was equipped with the great technology, including big screen television for viewing microscopic marine life, satellite locator maps and nature videos. It was a well-run cruise, in which we had the opportunity to see crabs and other sealife that were netted and brought on board for closer examination.
We had a great time, even got to pilot the boat for a few minutes each! In the pictures you'll see that we have "name" tags on that say "ORCA", which of course is the Killer Whale. This name, I was assured had nothing to do with our size - in order to orgnize a group of up to 50 people on the boat, we were divided into groups, each of which would be in different areas of the boat at varying times, doing various activities. Being the "ORCA" group meant that we were at the top of the food chain (i.e., adults who were capable of taking care of ourselves), and could go anywhere on the boat, and take part in organized activities, if we wished, or not.
