Today, we took a ride back about one hour south on the Oregon Coast Highway (101) to the town of Florence. One of the things I don't think I've mentioned is that, ever since we got into Oregon, I've noticed how many beautiful, bright-colored rhododendrons there are everywhere - huge bushes, almost trees, even growing wild in the forests. As we drove through Florence in the motorhome the other day, we saw a few classic cars, and saw a banner or two proclaiming it the weekend of the 100th "Rhody" Festival. So, once we were settled in, I found information about the Festival online, and today we went to Florence and spent a couple of fun hours at their classic car show. Festival weekend has also turned into a huge bike (as in motorcycle) fest, so there was more than enough chrome and leather to go around! You may enjoy checking out the festival website, as there are a lot of great old photos of the early years of the festival: http://www.florencechamber.com/EvRhody.html
Another interesting sounding event, but one we didn't get to see, is the "SandMasters Sand Boarding Competition". Evidently, Florence is the home of the "world's first sandboard park", where sand dunes take the place of of snow-covered mountains, and sandboards take the place of snowboards. We had never heard of sandboarding before, but I guess we wouldn't be surprised to see it become part of the X-Games.
