Just a map pin to show where we're parked for the weekend. Plan to see lots of the giant redwoods, and our park is listed as the main elk viewing area anywhere around here (and they've left some evidence around to prove they exist!).
Sure enough, we woke up this morning to a herd of forty Roosevelt Elk right across the driveway from where we're parked! They're really interesting to watch, and move more gracefully than you'd expect from their almost 2,000 pound frames! I took quite a few still pictures, and some video, too - because we both found it interesting how slowly and easily (almost imperceptibly!)they rose and lay down again, by bending or straightening their front legs. Almost all of this herd appears to be females and young ones - yearlings at most. About five miles down the road, we saw a group of a half dozen or so that were all bulls.
At one point, when tourists and swallows seemed to be bothering them, several of them ran and jumped, spinning around, but otherwise, they did't move around much. They stayed in the little meadow all morning, and as we were heading out for our day of sightseeinng, they were just beginning to cross the driveway to head for the woods. We were glad that we watched them as long as we did, and got all the pictures we wanted, as we didn't see them all in this area again for the rest of our stay.
The Redwoods are amazing - of course, I had to shoot a couple hundred pictures of them, too!

P.S. I spent over 3 hours trying upload the videos of the elk to this entry, but we're not in a broadband connection area, and the website signed me off just as the upload was finishing - so, only still pictures will be attached to this entry...darn!
