What a great day trip today - we drove the ~25 miles to Santa Rosa, and after taking care of Greg's broken glasses frames at a Vision World in the mall there, we went to the Charles M. Schulz Museum and spent the day with Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts Gang. A beautiful museum full of wonderful cartoons - many in a Gallery show called "Peanuts Lives!" in which dozens of other cartoonists recognized the Peanuts Gang and their special characteristics in a salute to Charles M. (Sparky) Schulz. We went across the street and had tuna salad sandwiches(Schulz' favorite!)for lunch at The Warm Puppy Cafe, while watching ice skaters on "Snoopy's Home Ice" - an indoor arena built by Charles M. Schulz, and where many seniors' hockey tournaments (in which the Minnesota native played) were held over the years.
From there, we went to one of only 3 "Old Faithful" Geysers in the world - not nearly as big as the one in Yellowstone (or so I've heard, not having been there - yet), but interesting to see, nonetheless.
A visit to Bennett Lane Winery rounded out our day, with another winery/racing connection, much like our visit last year to Richard Childress' winery in North Carolina. Randy Lynch, owner of Bennet Lane Winery, is a former race driver himself, and is now owner and chief sponsor of the Bennet Lane Nascar Grand National West Division #2 Ford, driven by Mike David, and currently first in points in the division. Bennett Lane Winery and Lynch Racing were recently featured in the award winning documentary Car Stories, a tale of and what drives a person's passion for cars and racing. This being the day that Dale Earnhardt, Jr. announced his "free agency" as he's decided to leave Dale Earnhardt, Incorporated, there was as much talk of racing at this winery as there was of wine! We did get a special peek at the Bennett Lane race car that was parked out back, surrounded by oak wine aging barrels - what a GREAT combination - and a GREAT day!
