We drove back across the North Carolina border, about 10-15 minutes, and rented a wonderful (brand new!) pontoon boat for a half day to cruise around Lake Gaston. Lake Gaston is beautiful - it reminds me a lot of Lake Minnetonka, the lake I lived on in Minnesota in a lot of ways. Lake Gaston is about 35 miles long, and only 1 mile wide at its widest point, but it has over 350 miles of shoreline, because of the many bays, creeks, and inlets. The shoreline is filled with vacation homes (I surmised, by the size and apparent cost of them, that they would be permanent homes, but was told that very few of them are year-round dwellings!), a few older ones, but most of the "cabin" types have been torn down and mansions have been built in their place. It was a PERFECT day - just on the verge of hot, but not quite there. Lots of pictures to upload a bit later!
