Where I stayed
Orange City RV Resort
With Ruth Ann and Frank in their motorhome, and us in ours, we moved the hour and a half from Webster to a nice RV Resort in Orange City, Florida on Thursday - which is about a half hour from Daytona, and about the same from Volusia County Speedway and New Smyrna Speedway - short tracks that have a couple weeks of races going on right now.
Soon after we got parked on Thursday was the launch time for the Space Shuttle Atlantis from nearby Kennedy Center. Everybody in the park was outside watching - many who had seen it from there before - but the cloud cover was way too heavy, and we didn't get to see anything. I was so disappointed - it's something I've always wanted to see.
The four of us went to dirt track races at Volusia Speedway on Thursday night, and on Friday, we had lunch at the North Turn Bar and Grill - located right on Daytona Beach at the point where the north turn was located for the original Daytona races. It's a fun restaurant, filled with old and new racing memorabilia. After lunch, we drove a long way ON Daytona Beach - I believe it's the only beach in the country that allows regular road vehicles to drive on it.
Friday night was good racing at New Smyrna Speedway - with Nascar regulars Kenny Schrader and Kenny Wallace taking part.
Saturday, we enjoyed watching the Bud Shootout on TV - celebrating the start of another Nascar Race Season!
