After enjoying a late sleep-in, we drove the hour or so to Ft. Smith, Arkansas (our 45th State visited of the lower 48!) to visit the Ft. Smith National Historic Monument, which includes a long history, going back to 1817.

It is perhaps best known as a key waystation on The Trail of Tears...when the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, (Muscogee) Creek and Seminole Indian
tribes were forcibly moved to Indian Territory, the Arkansas River served as a water route to Fort
Smith where they received supplies before crossing the river into Indian
Territory.

Also well-known as the courthouse and jail where The "Hanging Judge",  Judge Isaac Parker made his mark, and much more recently, as the basis for the movies "Hang 'Em High" and "True Grit".

We spent time going through the old fort, saw the jailhouse and the courtroom as it then looked, and then wandered across the street to  see the Ft. Smith Museum of History, full of many wonderful displays of the development of this gateway to the West.

Our next stop was a "foodie" visit!  Our full-timer friends, Ann & Ken Sair, had told us about the Pink Flamingo BBQ in Ft. Smith - so we decided to head over there, even though it was too early for dinner.  We decided to have a little sample of Ralph's award-winning baby back ribs, and ordered a rack (which he took right off the smoker!) to take home for dinner!  It was a fun place to visit, Ralph was a great host, and deservedly proud of his "hobby gone wild" (as he called it) and the successes they've had.  Our dinner tonight was scrumptious, and now it's time to lock things down again, as we're on the road again in the morning, heading to our riverfront site in Little Rock, Arkansas for 3 nights!

I'll have to post pictures from today at a later time, as it's about bedtime now.
