The day after our Key West adventure, we left southern Florida and drove back up to central Florida, to the place seeming most like "home" these last couple of months - our friend Pat's in Webster. It's really something to pull in to a lovely, spacious yard and be met by a smiling friend in a golf cart carrying mail and packages that have been delivered there for you! We settle in quickly, make our dinner plans, and get down to the business of our Scrabble Game! As usual, Pat wins, and we lament how much we'll miss this new tradition once we move on out of Florida. (More on that, later!)
On Sunday morning, March 26th, we left the motorhome at Pat's and took off in the car, heading north for Hilton Head, South Carolina, where Rose was looking forward to meeting up with her many old friends from the incentive industry at the IMRA Conference Past Presidents' Reception and the Monday night Clambake. Myrna, Rose's close friend and business partner in Rose Incentives, who now owns the company, was kind enough to host us for the clambake, and are we ever glad we went - it was fabulous food, but most of all, fabulous fun. (See Pictures 1-4) Rose so enjoyed introducing Greg to folks she'd known as long ago as the 80's, when she worked at General Mills in Minneapolis, and they had called on her there, before she had become an incentive rep, herself. Greg enjoyed hearing from Rose's friends about some of the laughs they'd all had back then (many at her expense!). More plans to connect up in the Midwest were established, with talk of visiting Norma Jean when we're in Wisconsin, and the possibility of a Minnesota Incentive Club Reunion on a boat on Lake Minnetonka when we're in Minnesota in early August. (Yep, that's the boat - and the lake - made infamous by a few Minnesota Vikings!)
After two great nights of laughing and partying with friends and a couple of hours relaxing at our hotel's Tiki Hut Bar by the beach listening to great music and drinking an adult beverage or two (some complete with little umbrellas!), we checked out on Wednesday morning to head over to Rose's Cousin Janet and her husband Bob's place, also on Hilton Head Island. (See Picture #5) We had a great visit, a delicious breakfast, made plans to connect up again when we have Rose's Mom in Wilmington, North Carolina, and then the convertible top went down and we were on the road again, heading back to Florida.
This was the first traveling we'd done without carrying our house with us - and we realized how spoiled we are! We missed our own bed and own pillows, there was only decaf (and lousy decaf, at that!) coffee in our room in the morning, and all our toiletries were jammed into toiletry bags...not where we're so used to finding them. After a lifetime of traveling for business, we now find that there's only one way that it REALLY is fun - and we're lucky enough to be doing it!
