..To the end of the road...

Pipalkoti - Joshimath

Our breakfast restaurant was a pure-vegetarian one- so no omelettes for breakfast but parathas- delicious and very filling small pancakes. With a one-speed bicycle the steep mountain road to Joshimath was no problem as long the road was going uphill. Before lunchtime we had already covered 25 of the 37 km's to Joshimath.

After lunch a last steep 5 kilometer hair-pin climb and easily we pedalled into Joshimath. A busy little mountaintown with several places to stay and numerous shops.

..a day off in Yoshimath...

Joshimath

At 8 o'clock in the morning we walked into the dinner-room of our Tourist Resthouse. We were surprised to see that all tables were already occupied! The rest-house staff were using them as beds and had not woken up yet!!

At 9 o'clock we were waiting with 3 other indian tourists at the office of the ropeway to the views at Gorson. Officially at least 15 passengers were needed for a departure- in-officially 10 would be enough we were told. But, as things in India go, we left one hour later with 8 men on board.

The views of Nanda Devi and the surrounding snowy giants were superb. But now they were so close we missed the mistery that surrounded those same views for e.g. Kausani

Among the other parts of the country i found the people of Pipalkoti, joshimath, chamoli, Bemaru, Math, Bejani and Merag more courteous.
They are so pious and altruistic that even a stranger or foreigner coming to their village and dont have money to

Bemaru is a small village of around 170 people in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. It's maiin market is pipalkoti which is 5 kilometer far from Bemaru. Here the literacy rate is more that 75% constituting both the male and female population. The villagers are very simple and sober and always shows keenness to help each other.
It is been surrouned with four villages, Bejani from right, Math and surenda from down and Ludaon from back. The people of Bemaru are very religious and courteous, they worship lord Shiva. There are two very famous temples of Lord Shiva in Bemaru where people not only from other neighborhood villages but also from the distant locatioins withing India and foreign used to come for a holy sight.
Due to hilly area the villagers used to cultivate land in ladder form. They have to work very hard. A few years back the govt also provided them with potable water facility and the work of aligning Bemaru with Pipalkoti and Gopeshar is also on progress under the state governmental project of joining villages with roads.
In terms of education the villagers of Bemaru (Chamoli) were luckier than the people of other villages. They were priviledged with the two school one is primary school (Prathmik vidyalaya Bemaru and Prathmic madhmayamik vidhyalaya) used to provied education till 5 and 8th standard till 1999. But later on by accepting request of villager that their pupils need to go very far (Pipalkoti) for gatherin education, the state govt sanctioned a high school which now teaches children upto 10th standard.
The villagers of Bemaru are very religious and also follows some cultures. Their favorite festivals are all hindu festival like Holi, Diwali, Basant Panchmi, Dushra, Maha Shivratri, Ram Navami, Raksha Bandhan, Janma Asthmi,Navratri, Makar Sakranti etc. Due to the unity among the villagers and its neighborhood most of the festivals are being celebrated together at temples. They organise huge festive sponsored collectively by all families and villages.
Though people of Bemaru are educated and courtious but casteism is also prevailing there, but with the passage of time they are also breaking some of the taboos and aheading together for a prosperous future.
