TIP: The ferries here can be hectic. If you're with an Overland Truck - take only what's necessary (for me that was an emergency Tsh1000 and maybe my camera, no more. You don't want something to go missing in the crush. Stick to the end you came onto the ferries by. They will let people out at the other end. This end becomes the new crush so you, up the rear, can take your time a little more.
TIP: If you're heading to Zanzibar, pre-book your tickets as the ferries there can sell out quite quickly on the day (so I hear). And pack your passport, you need it for getting in and out of Zanzibar. Though Zanzibar is a part of Tanzania (in fact it is the "zan" in TanZANia), it is a security precaution to ensure no one slips in from the ocean.
