Eddie picked me up at about 8:30 AM and we took an autorickshaw to Bandra station where Eddie met a courier who gave him the passport and paperwork of his "sponsor". (The sponsor guarantees that if a person on a work visa needs to be deported, the sponsor will pay for that.) Then we boarded a second class compartment on a fast train to Mumbai. All the things you've read about Indian trains and crowding are true. Sardines have more room than we had. And there are no doors so people are hanging out of the car and getting that windblown look. But I was offered a seat and gratefully took it. Indians actually respect the elderly and I’m a westerner to boot. Definitely enjoyed that seat. (By the way, I have been (very) occasionally offered a seat on San Francisco buses as well.)

Before entering the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Officers), we stopped at a corner kiosk to have yet more copies made of the growing pile of forms. This time Eddie got a friendly official who, in fact, had seen him on his first visit. She told him that he had been working on his renewal too long and she wanted to help him finish it up now. But…..there was yet more paperwork needed. Eddie’s agent needed to submit the proper forms showing Eddie’s earnings for the year to date. If that’s submitted by 1 December, the visa extension will be approved.

Now we’ll see if the agent can actually do this.

Elated, we left the FRRO, got some lunch, and trained back to Bandra where we caught up with B, Sonal and Roopal (Sonal’s sister) who were shopping for Sonal’s wedding gown and saris for the two other Mehta women. Together we visited a number of clothing stores and, finally, Eddie was able to find a wedding coat everyone liked. The pants and shoes will (as with mine) be custom made and, again, the total bill was about $300. I predict that Sonal’s sari will not be ready until a week before the wedding (Barbara wouldn’t even bet on that early).

By now, it’s almost 8:00 PM so we decide to have dinner  at a place called Wild Thing. It’s a cross between the Rainforest restaurants in the US and Disney’s Tiki Room. As we entered the building, Eddie was accosted by a young man who I immediately recognized. He had a major role in Jhansi Ki Rani, theTV show that Eddie is in. So we all had our pictures taken with him.

Dinner at The Wild Thing was fun. Lots of lions roaring and birds chirping. And the buffet
