Straight from class Arwen and I headed out to collect a picnic lunch of cheese, fruit, onion dip and bread and set off to the banks of the Seine where the Paris Plage's have been constructed. Sand has been shipped in, decking has been installed and another summer in Paris sees crowds of locals and tourists flocking to the fake beaches which, whilst lacking in swimmable water, shade and space; are incredibly popular and are filled with bikini-donning girls and topless guys eat afternoon. A very odd concept when you come from a coast-accessable city with some of the best beaches in the world. We found a corner in the shade on the decking and sat down for a tasty spread, being offered a handful of cherries by an old frenchman who seemed quite taken with our lunch-in-the-shade idea.

The Musée d'Orsay was spectacular. Paul Gaugin; Van Gogh; Paul Signac; Maximillien Luce; François Garas; Édouard Vuillard; Monet; Edgar Degas; Manet, Jacques-Émile Blanche; Karl Bennewitz Bon Löfen, le jeune; Jean-François Millet; Pierre Auguste Renoir; Camille Pissaro; Alfred Sisley; Alexander Harrison; Georges Rochegrosse; René-Emile Ménard; Léon Frédéric; Gustave Courbet; Rosa Bonheur and Camille Carot all had pieces on display which I was enchanted and awed by.

I was ushered out of the museum as it closed, frantically typing some last key names down; no photos were allowed, not even of the artist write-ups beside the pieces. I returned to the apartment and wrote out some postcards to friends back home. I had the leftover vegetables for dinner and a glass of red to accompany my writing.

The museum sounded awesome, even though half of the names were unfamiliar to me! You will have to educate me...
