Sadly took our leave of our Bagus Place paradise waving goodbye to Claire, Ajay and Yono and the crew and the crystal clear turquoise blue waters, golden sands and jungle of beautiful Tioman Island for the short hop to Singapore. Luckily our flight was on time which meant that the dash from Seletar Airport (the smaller Singapore airport) to Changi International Airport ran smoothly (allaying Dee's worries!)and we made our Tiger Air flight to Chiang Mai in good time. The place we stayed here - the Tamarind Village is in a fabulous location - right next to the Sunday market and within the old walled city. Thought we must have looked like we were wet behind the ears when the cab driver tried to dump us on a busy road pointing "Hotel there" when all we could see was a very busy market, tons of traffic and no sign of our hotel. After some convincing he delivered us to the hotel which just did not look as billed - until we discovered it was the staff entrance! Dee's contacts had done here a treat with an upgrade to a Deluxe room at a princely total cost of only $25 - result!

So first stop, a saunter up and down the Sunday market - which was awash mainly with Thais and the odd backpacker and septagenarian tourist. As you can see we made friends with a rather nattily dressed dog...! Made a few purchases - sorongs, a hat and some tiger balm (aah, relief from our many angry bites. The market was quite a shock after the peace and solitude of our beachside retreat with the competing stands, food stalls and impromptu concerts which blocked the entire market.. so after a few hours we retired to a bar for some delicious Pad Thai, Green curry and a few large Singha beers.

The next morning I forced the ever sleeping Phil out of bed at 7 am as we had not reset our watches - he was not best pleased, but we managed to do quite a lot this morning in checking that our plans are all running smoothly. We are being picked up in a while for the airport and our flight to Mae Hongson to meet our local guide Chan, who will take us on a 6 day trek staying with hilltribes enroute. We are very ecited if not a liittle daunted as it is VERY, VERY hot at the moment, and as we are still not fully acclimatised, I swear we will melt into a puddle!
