Jennie's VSO contact turned out to be a very sweet and friendly Brit called Bruce. Having invited us to his house for a cup of tea and some cake, he asked us what our plans were for the weekend ... And then promptly invited us to join him and some friends in their bank holiday weekend trip to Lake Kivu. Our plans had been somewhat different to this but I now discovered one of the joys of travelling: out went the original plan and in came the new!
That night I tasted the Rwandan answer to fast food: omelette speciale. This is essentially an omelette with everything else that the kitchen is serving thrown in. Thus my omelette was a plateful of egg, chunks of goat meat, potatoes, carrots, peas plus some pasta and rice for good measure! It was incredibly filling, cost a pittance and comes highly recommended (alongside the strawberry juice that is absolutely delicious; I never knew that strawberries grow in Rwanda!!!). Having been stuffed to capacity and washed it all down with some more Mutzig, we kicked poor Bruce out of his bedroom and enjoyed a free room for the night! (Thanks Bruce!)
