If I'm faithful I'll record the various steps in what's sure to be a long and circuitous journey from Bainbridge Island, Washington to Shalanki, in Transcarpathian Ukraine. We will be searching for evidence of my grandfather, Benjamin Klein, who left his village 106 years ago to travel to America. He was sixteen years old. We have no leads and very little information other than the name of his village. Is it foolish to even slightly expect to find anything? Can we even get to Shalanki, if it really exists?
Who knows, but it looks like we'll try. Annie and I are now riding on the 3:55 pm ferry to Seattle. From there we go onward to the airport to catch the 6:45 flight to London. Then we get to experience nine or ten hours on a flying sardine can--can't wait! Well, bon voyage to us all!
