Where I stayed
We checked out of our hotel and said farewell to a delightful time in San Cristobal. As our flight was not until 5pm we had some time to continue exploring the region and we started off with a stop for a boat ride at Sumidero Canyon. This canyon was created by the Rio Grijalva which after a few nights of intense rains was swollen so much that the normal departure area was flooded so we were having walk along benches to the boats.
The next minute we were flying down the river on a large motorised dinghy boat, within seconds of departure I was smacked in the face by a flying baseball hat. The view (out of my weeping eye) was spectacular as the rock face towered 800m above us and due to the rain water we witnessed some amazing water falls which appeared to burst out of the rock from what look liked a giant mouth. At one waterfall there was a Christmas tree formation of thick hanging moss.
The unfortunate view was that due to the heavy rainfall we had to plow through the largest example of waste I have ever seen. Plastic rubbish floated on the top of the river having been washed from the streets and river edges of Tuxtla Gutierrez. It was a heavy example of how destructive humans are on the environment and how easy it is to spoil what mother earth has given us. I only wished that the rubbish would run forth and clogg up the Chicoasen hydroelectric dam, which the river runs through. That way the local people would start to understand the damage they are doing and start being considerate with their waste. A sorry sight which was a shame considering what a great canyon this is.
We had lunch at the colonial town of Chiapa de Corzo which is a pretty town and then headed to the airport where we said a fond farewell to Marco and Antonio who had been with us for eight days and made our time in Chiapa and Tabasco very enjoyable.
