Where I stayed
The only thing we wanted to do in Manaus was to visit the Manaus Opera House. We arrived in the afternoon and after fannying around with the police at the airport trying to find out whether we will be heavily penalised for losing Fynn's entry form when we leave Brazil we eventually gave up and ambled off to the Opera House. This is a grand building that was built at the height of the 'black gold’ period (rubber) and no expense was spared. We went on a tour and it was amazing to see that with exception to the external colour it is virtually as it was when it was first built.
Afterwards we went to a fantastic Amazonian art shop called ‘gallery Amazonica’ which is a project with the Waimiria Atroari Indians. The handicrafts are exceptional and the lady who runs the shop was so informative explaining to us about the different tribes, where they live and how they live. She even set up a couple of rolls of carpet for the kids to blow darts from blowpipes at.
