Flag of Croatia  , Hvar Island,
Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Our boat trip from Podgora dropped us in the cute but small town of Vrboska. From there we took the local bus across the island to the port town of Hvar. The meandering bus ride gave us a good look about the island. We weaved through vineyards that lay scattered about old townships, before heading up and over the island to the other coast. Higher up the now dormant land bore an innumerable number of stone terraces layered on steep terrain, hinting at the laborious nature of agriculture on the Island, and much of the Dalmatian coast in general. The number of hours required to build the network seemed beyond reckoning.

Hvar town itself was a small but stunning affair. The town was a central trading port for the Venetians and at its peak one of the most wealthy places in Dalmatia. Outside of Dubrovnik its the most popular destination on the Dalmatian coast, and, judging by the sheer number of super yachts and glamorous pampering spots, the little town still attracts more than its share of wealth. Subsequently there is more than a sense of it being a 'see and be seen' kinda place, which in turn  imbued the town with a hint of the garish. We found more humour in the tiny white speedos and chest hair than those sporting the outfits surely would have intended.

The old fort was perhaps the highlight. Sitting just back from the old town center it cut an imposing figure. We found the view from the top to be particularly beautiful. It's well preserved character gave the town a very real sense of its buccaneering maritime history.  Squint enough to block out the Gucci and Prada and you could transport yourself back to the glory days of the high seas.
