Putting the bags under the beds in the dark was a bad idea. Mine was covered in crud and unidentified liquid when I pulled it out in the morning, hopefully nothing that can't be washed out.

The train arrived in Yichang at 3.30pm, nearly 14 hours after leaving. I'm certainly getting used to these long journeys and they seem to fly by as long as you've got some music and a good book. We had one cabin-mate who was about 50 who insisted on continuing to speak to us in Chinese despite it being clear we couldn't understand

We're in Yichang to catch a hydrofoil that will take us east along the Yangzi river past the Three Gorges Dam project, then each of the Three Gorges, then dropping us off three hours bus ride from Chongquing. We headed to one hotel as recommended in the Rough Guide I have. We're definitely off the westerners tourists trail and there aren't any youth hostels around. We couldn't find our hotel and we walked into a nice looking hotel to ask directions. They'd never heard of the one we wanted and since they were pricey we started to haggle over price. We got them down from 260 Yuan per night for a really good twin room to 150 Yuan and checked in. Once we were in the room I looked at the stationery on the table and had a good laugh when I realised we were in the very hotel the guide book recommended - even though the receptionists down stairs couldn't recognise the name written in English!

We headed to the Yichang International Hotel (very tall and posh) and used their little travel centre to book the hydrofoil tickets. It's an early start (hydrofoil leaves at 7am) so we're off to find food and beers.
