Arriving in `Fortress America`, I was expecting long delays at security and immigration with lots of checks of bags etc. On the immigration form on we had to fill out there was one question asking if you had ever been a member of the Nazi party. Naturally I doubt anyone answers to that one! However passing through security was very straight forward apart from the slightly large queue and I was now in America, LA to be exact.
And what a crazy palce it is, straight away as I got on the bus I was given a brief taster of LA life. Some guy in a wheel chair got on the bus with a six foot tall replica of a night in armour perched on the stand. Only in LA would this happen. He told everyone on the bus he's just picked it up for the bargain price of $100 and he collected that kind of stuff!
The hostel I was staying in was on Venice beach home to muscle beach and a hell of a lot of crazy people. I can honestly say I have never seen so many crazy people in my life. They all seem to be homeless, from the crazy bag ladies to the guy on roller skates playing electrice guitar. One of the bag ladies had one of the most impressive beards I've ever seen but the weirdest thing I saw was a guy walk into a liquor store at 10pm wearing just a leopard skin pair of swimming togs and some big ass headphones! It was all I could do not to laugh at that.
There are some normal people in LA too especialy further up in Santa Monica which is a much better neighbourhood to visit. As I only had one day in LA really I went downtown which was actually nice enough. It took forever to get there on the bus though, LA is huge and you really do need a car to get around and there are plenty of freeways for these cars as you can really when flying in.
One day was only enough to get a small taste of LA, in spite of what people said about it I sorta liked it. I wouldn't like to live there but it does have a certain individualistic attitude about it where people just do whatever they want tha is interesting to see. Obviously there are major downsides to this attitude with all the homeless people but it's interesting to see.
