Another town which is an easy day trip from Kyoto is Nara. Nara was the first permanent capital of Japan but it wasn`t long before the capital was moved to Kyoto. Still, Nara has an obscene amount of old temples and palaces to see.
The most impressive was the one with the big Buddha inside. It`s the largest wooden building in the world and is big. Apart from the Big Buddha there is also a wooden pillar with a hole in it the sixe of the Buddha`s nostril. Apparently if you can squeeze through this hole you ar guaranteed to achieve enlightenment. It was great fun to watch all the Japanese tourists squeezing their way through, some of them with help from their friends who had to pullthem true by their arms.
Naturally as a thoroughly elightened person already, I didn`t feel the need to squeeze my way through :).
After Kyoto, Nara and Japan in general I`ve seen enough wooden temples to last a life time and won`t be visiting any more for a long time to come.
