Finally, a good night's sleep. The temperature seems to have relaxed enough for us not to sweat all night in the tent. We actually didn’t emerge until 10am. Usually by this time the tent has heated up into an oven but as we move east, maybe we will find things cooling a little. It was still in the high 80s today but that is just fine for cycling.

We enjoyed a slow breakfast at Starbucks and then paid a visit to a bike shop.  These are few and far between (bike shops, not Starbucks) as it seems Americans don’t like bicycles, so we made sure to stock up on spare tubes to get us rolling all the way to NY City.

The ride today was much more relaxing.  Yesterday we had bitten off more than we could chew so we settled for a short 40 mile day. We met quite a few friendly locals at drinks stops along the way and had no problems with aggressive drivers. The only problem we did encounter was when suddenly, with a jeep tucked in behind us waiting patiently to overtake, another car came past us ON THE GRASS VERGE ON OUR INSIDE.  We couldn’t quite believe what was going on.  The guy came to a stop 50m on and I cycled up to ask him what the hell he was doing.  He was really rattled and explained how he had not seen the jeep behind us waiting to pass, so to avoid going into the back of him he took evasive action and left the road to pass on the inside.  It was a pretty scary moment for all of us.

5 miles later we were safely in Casey and found a beautiful lakeside campsite to spend another pleasantly cool evening.  The insects are causing us much grief at the moment with bites from head to toe.  Otherwise, on we go, now trying to find a route to avoid the city of Indianapolis which has crept up on us.

Miles Cycled; 40 miles still into a strong wind

No. of times beeped and sworn at: 0, a much calmer day at the office

What about my idea of Bloomington,Columbus(small one), Hamilton, Washington Court House - think it just skirts Cincinatti. Only joking - what do I know about cycling routes, but it does avoid Indianapolis.
Overtaking on the inside does not sound fun. Glad things are a little easier and hope you are sleeping well as I type.
Tons of love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Can't quite understand how the driver failed to see the jeep!? I should think you were all pretty rattled. Shame about the bug situation as everything else seems to be getting a bit more tolerable. Exciting news about E's new bean! Just had a scype from Amanda and Dom in Singapore before they head off to the Gillie Isles on Sunday - you lot do get about a bit!

Does Terre Haute mean what I think it does? Hope it's not going to be too high!

'High Ground' indeed, Jojo. However, we don't seem to have gone up any hills so maybe tomorrow will be down all the way (fat chance)
