Today has been a truly great day off. When we checked up online and found out that St Louis is indeed the second most dangerous city in the USA (it was knocked off its no.1 spot this year) we felt no guilt about not doing any sightseeing. Venturing out to check out the famous arch up close was quite enough. Its pretty amazing, but in 100F, we weren't hanging around in the park and instead found a supermarket for supplies and headed back to the room.

This afternoon we’ve spent time in the business suite planning a way out of town which avoids the supposedly 'deadly’ district of East St. Louis. A friendly chap in there reckoned that probably crime rates are down due to extreme heat keeping people inside, but we think we won’t risk it anyway! As far as the route ahead to New York goes, we’ve got about 1100 miles left, a distance which should be fairly straightforward in the 25 days we have left. We’ll have to keep to our 50 miles or more targets though as we don’t want to end up having to make up time with 100 miles days as we did in Malaysia.

Looking back at the blog, we realised we’ve not had a day off for 14 days, something which probably explains our lethargy and the harrowing extent of my chaffing. I think the thing that I’m most looking forward to on our return is not having to put half a pot of Vaseline in my shorts every morning! That and sleeping in my own bed and not being constantly soaked in sweat. Oh and also not having to be on my bike for at least 4 hrs every day.

Anyway Mikey’s just headed off to the supermarket for more food and also some wine so that we can celebrate his sister getting engaged!!!!!! Very exciting news Laura and Tom. I think I’m just going to have another little sleep…

Jojo on

It's not very reassuring for those back home to hear what a dangerous place you're in! The baseball game sounded great fun - it's rounders isn't it?
