Once again we were woken in the night by a hungry racoon that had to be scared off, but apart from that had a lovely and relatively cool night's sleep. Leaving the campsite was delayed by the reception lady’s inability to comprehend what "we’re from England and don’t have a phone number in America" meant. She was unable to process our payment without a phone number and perplexed about what to do – they seriously don’t get many tourists here! Mikey gave her the cash and left her scratching her head.

Back in Hermitage we waved to Sheriff Ray Tipton who was sitting outside the jail having yet another cigarette. It STANK of smoke in there when we visited yesterday. After that, the 44 mile day was a tough but steady ride. Some huge hills, but small towns with icy drinks every 10 miles kept us going. Before Camdenton, we headed down into a valley and crossed a branch of the Lake Ozark which looked SO tempting, but no, on we went.

It was 2 miles steep uphill into Camdenton and only the icy water from my cool bag made it possible. A huge man at the drive-in MacDonalds yelled “You guys are crazy – I saw you go up that hill!!” at us as we stumbled in to revive ourselves in the AC. I don’t know what cycle tourers did before wireless internet, but it makes life so easy. We spotted a campsite 4 miles further on, and after a quick supermarket stop headed straight there.

Ozark Trails RV Park is fantastic. After we were shown to our lovely site we headed straight to the pool for a long awaited swim and then had our first shower in ages. I managed to skype home and catch up on the gossip and after we’d had a very lovely salad, the manager Michael came over and said that as nobody was renting it tonight we could stay in his RV. He thought we might appreciate AC and a bed! We certainly did.

Miles Cycled; 44 with continuing serious hills and heat

I am so sad to have missed the opportunity to meet you both! And here your were right in my back yard! I would have taken you to all the great boating spots and bought you a few pints.. to be sure! RATS! To think I stumbled upon your blog a week after you came here. What a shame. My garden wouldve been open to you as well as a lovely dock to swim the our huge lake! Perhaps next time?
