Well, you may have noticed that Mikey has been writing the blog for ages. This is because my brain doesn't work when the temperature gets into triple figures and I can only drone on about how hot it is and recount boring details about suncream. I feel guilty though and as it looks like the heat is here to stay (it was even 100F in New York today) I think I’m going to have to give it a go. Hmmm, I can’t even remember what happened this morning (Thursday now) let alone yesterday. I would consult the photos but it seems Mikey only took one! Anyway, here’s what I eventually remembered..

I slept extremely well snuggled up on the spectators stand by the baseball pitch in Cunningham. It was lovely to be outside with the breeze and I even got slightly chilly at one point! Mikey on the other hand didn’t go back to sleep after he woke up at 3 am to find 2 cheeky kids creeping up on us. They ran away terrified when he shouted at them, but he couldn’t relax after that. When I eventually woke up at 8 he tried to make pancakes but we got the mix wrong and just had some gooey lumps instead – not great.

A 19 mile blast on no breakfast thankfully ended with breakfast in Kingman’s McDonalds. Here we met lots of excited old folk very interested in the trip and eager to hand out lots of advice. Luckily we didn’t listen when they told us there were lots of places to stop and buy drinks on the way to Wichita (nothing for 29 miles) and that it was flat (lots of long uphill grinds). The lunch I packed and vile hot water kept us going to Goddard (5 miles from our Witchita Campsite). Poor Mikey was struggling after no sleep and I was predictably whining about the temperature. A man at Kingman McDonalds had offered to put the bikes on the back of his truck and drive us to Wichita. He said that it would normally be seen as cheating but as it was 102F an exception would be made. I agreed with him and was very keen to do it – spiteful to the last, Mikey said no.

When we eventually arrived at the Blasi Campground we were only interested in diving in their pool and did so immediately. Once out of the pool, the heat hit us again and we became very agitated about how we were going to keep ourselves sane. I then had a brainwave  - the cinema! A legitimate reason to spend time in an air-conditioned room, rather than the protracted trips to supermarkets and garages we have been making and endless MacDonalds visits.

Steve Blasi at the reception desk not only recommended a cinema and booked a taxi, he gave us his number so that we could call him to pick us up when we had finished and therefore wouldn’t have to pay for both journeys. What a lovely guy!

The cinema was an extremely good call, even the taxi ride there was lovely and we appreciated the view of Wichita and commentary from the batty cab driver. He thought we should go and see the film in which everyone is wearing big black glasses. We eventually worked out he was talking about Harry Pothead. We chose Horrible Bosses (VERY FUNNY) instead and loved our large drinks and popcorn and free refills of both.

Steve picked us up in his Mum’s old Lincoln, a very cool American car and told us the story of the Blasi Campground on the way home. It’s a real family business and there are 9 siblings helping out. He dropped us right outside our tent and wished us the very best of luck for our trip – The people of Kansas are so kind.

Missed the photos, but quite understand. Do take care you two - apparently the advice is - don't go outside in the heat - only mad dogs and P and M would actually cycle 50 miles in the heat!! XX
