We could not take it anymore. Sleeping inside a tent is not possible in this heat so last night was spent under the stars. The risk assessment had been drawn up early evening; high human activity would mean no snakes, scorpions or spiders, we were going open air and hoping for a cooler night. We both woke without bites and feeling like we had actually caught some quality sleep.

So, a day off.  What to do?  I know, let's go on a bike ride to Walmart to buy a sunhat and then sweat our way around a pretty cheesy reconstruction of Front Street, Dodge City.  Both experiences convinced us that we were better off in a restaurant enjoying a long lazy Sunday lunch. Unfortunately the only option was an Italian which actually looked pretty authentic from the outside.  An hour later we wished we had grabbed a picnic in the park.  It wasn’t too bad but the fresh pasta and crisp Pinot Grigio was seriously lacking.  A bowl of cream with some pasta dipped in and a 32oz cup of Sprite is much more the American way.

We eased our way back to the tent and spent an afternoon reading by the lake.  Stacey, still pregnant with her 4th child whizzed around on her golf cart, the mad blonde from Florida once again bounced along the waters edge as her puppies cooled off in the lake, and the 'dude’ who used to work here cycled around and around.  Ruth in the camp shop recommended Beanie-Weenies and sweetcorn for supper and introduced us to pancake mix which needs only water – a real winner. She was extremely excited to talk with us as she is a massive fan of the Royal Family and was eager for news of them. We were sadly lacking in much extra info, but we had yet another good discussion of The Wedding.

The day was mostly spent feeling very lethargic and lazy at the thought of Mands and George slogging round that Chichester Triathlon Circuit whilst we slept. We really wished we could have been part of the finish line welcoming party – heroes, both of them.

Dodge City was once the crossroads where cattle herders cooled off with gallons of whisky, talented young ladies and shoot outs in the streets.  Now it seems the most exciting stuff happens at Pizza Hut on a Saturday Evening.
