Where I stayed
Las Vegas KOA Kampground

The campsite was lovely and shaded and after our first cool nights sleep in several days, we slept in until 8. Having not arrived here until 7pm, we decided to make the most of the site and stayed until check out at 11 – very relaxed. Mikey had to fix a puncture on his front tyre which had gone down over night. The culprits for the last two we've had have been 'goatheads’ spiky thorns from a plant indigenous to New Mexico which people have been warning us about for days.

Once again, we were heading to Las Vegas, but apparently this one had no resemblance to ‘Sin City’ and is a quiet, pretty town in the mountains. Best of all, the KOA was only 50 miles from our present campsite and south of the town. This means that we’ll have a ‘normal’ length day for the first time in ages and also be able to check out the town tomorrow morning on our way out.

We had to get back on the highway today, but the I-25 is much less busy than the I-40 and it felt pretty relaxed. After a massive 6 mile pass straight away we had lots of lovely scenic downhill, 30 straight forward miles. One puncture (mine) was easily dealt with. Annoyingly for the last 20 miles we got directed off the highway and took a minor road running alongside it. Our road climbed up and down steep hills the whole way to the campsite and as we struggled up them, we had to watch the cars cruise by on the highway which had cut through all the hills.

Never mind, we made it to the KOA by 4.30 and were once again made ridiculously welcome. Denny and Gloria, the owners, were very excited about the trip. They were also very excited that we were from England as Denny grew up in Yorkshire. He was surprised to hear that he has COMPLETELY lost any trace of any kind of English accent. They also showed us the site where a man who is walking across America is staying. He isn’t there at the moment but we want to try and meet him before we leave. He’s been going two years already.

We’ve just got back from the Kamp Kitchen where Denny’s Green Chile Philly Cheese burgers really hit the spot. We were a bit nervous about his cooking, but it was amazing. Hopefully we can head back there for another ‘all you can eat’ pancake extravaganza in the morning.

Today was so much more relaxed without a massive mile count and we are going to try to work out how to avoid them in future. It may involve some free camping, but that’s got to be better than 11 hour days. In Albuquerque, we worked out the problem is that it doesn’t get dark until 9pm, so there’s nothing to force us off the road, unlike in NZ when the light disappeared at 5.30pm. Off to find some accommodation on the way to Springer now!

So glad to hear you have had a half way reasonable ride for a change - the miles you have been tucking away seem madness! The green chilli burger sounded very adventurous and the bikers salad was wonderful to look at! If you have already clocked up 1,000 miles in the US how many more have you got?

We have all the family staying with us at the moment - plus Peter & Edith and we played (for the very first time ever in this house) charades last night after supper - needless to say it was fairly archaic and very funny as we have given up on bottles of wine and make do with boxes (I'm not nominating the quantity). We are all so pleased about Amanda mae and her job and she and Dom are off shortly to exotic places - when she has completed the Triatholon with George.
Lots of love from all at Highfield

Hope the 1000 miles already means that you can look forward to more time off when you want - brilliant. My task for the day is to take my car over to Dan's establishment for a mega service and other running repairs - am already wondering what rare little number he's going to give me to drive back in! Take care and deep up the good work - did you see Victoria Beckham's daughter is called 'Harper 7' - WHAT?? XX

Looking forward to more news about where you are and where you are heading - how many miles do you think you still have to go? It looks from the map that you could be a third of the way across. I will be in Cyprus from the 6th August and hope that we will have internet access - would miss my fix especially the cycle from Gatwick - can't believe it is only about 5 weeks away - you are both really amazing.
Take care and keep the info coming

Hey guys, loving all these lovely people who are nice to you - and not loving those horrible meanies! We have had a busy weekend moving house...yes I'm afraid we've gone and done it and left you lot in Williams Road! The new place is Sooooo lovely - green and orange swirly carpet, dark green wallpaper and a really lovely salmon pink bath suite (with the loo decked out in floor to ceiling pink swirly tiles - why I ask you!????!!). However once we are rid of all this it will be great - and has a big old back garden - and in fact front garden, with a garage so finally somewhere for all the bikes and windsurf kit! Anyway will stop banging on about it and catch up soon,
Love E xxxxxx
