Where I stayed
Las Vegas KOA Kampground
Once again, we were heading to Las Vegas, but apparently this one had no resemblance to ‘Sin City’ and is a quiet, pretty town in the mountains. Best of all, the KOA was only 50 miles from our present campsite and south of the town. This means that we’ll have a ‘normal’ length day for the first time in ages and also be able to check out the town tomorrow morning on our way out.
We had to get back on the highway today, but the I-25 is much less busy than the I-40 and it felt pretty relaxed
Never mind, we made it to the KOA by 4.30 and were once again made ridiculously welcome. Denny and Gloria, the owners, were very excited about the trip. They were also very excited that we were from England as Denny grew up in Yorkshire. He was surprised to hear that he has COMPLETELY lost any trace of any kind of English accent. They also showed us the site where a man who is walking across America is staying. He isn’t there at the moment but we want to try and meet him before we leave. He’s been going two years already.
We’ve just got back from the Kamp Kitchen where Denny’s Green Chile Philly Cheese burgers really hit the spot. We were a bit nervous about his cooking, but it was amazing. Hopefully we can head back there for another ‘all you can eat’ pancake extravaganza in the morning
Today was so much more relaxed without a massive mile count and we are going to try to work out how to avoid them in future. It may involve some free camping, but that’s got to be better than 11 hour days. In Albuquerque, we worked out the problem is that it doesn’t get dark until 9pm, so there’s nothing to force us off the road, unlike in NZ when the light disappeared at 5.30pm. Off to find some accommodation on the way to Springer now!
